How Blood Dungeon Works

Blood Dungeon is a 2D bullet-heaven platformer. You don't aim — your character auto-attacks the nearest enemy. Your job is to move: run, jump, climb ladders, slide down chains and navigate grates while kiting ever-growing hordes of monsters.

Each run takes place in a single arena. You survive as many waves as possible. Between waves, you choose upgrades (charms, weapons, stat boosts). When you die, you keep bones — the permanent currency spent in the Bone Shop between runs to unlock permanent upgrades, new characters and arenas.

Core loop

Enter arena → Survive waves → Collect blood/gold/bones → Die (or win) → Spend bones in Bone Shop → Unlock stuff → Repeat stronger.

The three resources

ResourceWhat it doesWhen collected
BloodHeals you and fills your blood meter for special abilitiesDrops from enemies constantly
GoldSpent on in-run upgrades between wavesDrops from enemies and chests
BonesPermanent meta-currency for the Bone ShopEarned based on wave reached and enemies killed

Movement & Survival Basics

Moving well is the single most important skill in Blood Dungeon. Since your weapon fires automatically, positioning is everything.

Essential movement techniques

  • Keep moving — Standing still is death. Enemies spawn from all directions and surround you fast.
  • Use verticality — Ladders, chains and grates let you reposition vertically. Climb to escape ground swarms, drop down to avoid aerial threats.
  • Wall jump / climb — Most characters can grab walls. Use this to reach high platforms and change direction quickly.
  • Kite in circles — In open arenas, run in large loops to bunch enemies up behind you, then your auto-weapon clears them.
  • Don't over-jump — Jumping makes you predictable. Use jumps to cross gaps or dodge, not as your primary movement.

Common beginner death

Getting cornered. Always know where your exits are. If an arena has only one ground route, stay near ladders so you can escape vertically.

Understanding waves

Each wave spawns a set number of enemies. Waves get progressively harder with more enemies, tougher types and eventually boss encounters every 5 waves. Between waves you have a short break to choose upgrades — use this time to reposition to a safe spot.

First Run Step-by-Step

  1. Pick Gun Man — He's the most forgiving starter with rapid fire and double jump.
  2. Choose the first arena — The starting arena is the simplest layout with good vertical escape routes.
  3. Wave 1-3: Focus on learning movement. Don't chase enemies — let them come to you and keep circling. Collect blood drops to stay healthy.
  4. First upgrade choice: Prioritize damage or fire rate upgrades. Damage helps clear faster; fire rate creates more bullet coverage. Avoid movement speed as your first pick.
  5. Wave 4-7: Enemies get denser. Start using ladders to break line of sight and reset enemy positions. Look for chests — they contain bonus gold and rare charms.
  6. First boss (Wave 5): Bosses have telegraphed attacks. Watch for wind-up animations, dodge through them, and keep dealing auto-damage. Don't panic — you have more time than you think.
  7. When you die: Note how many bones you earned. Go to the Bone Shop and buy your first permanent upgrade.

Your first Bone Shop purchase

Buy Max Health +1 or Starting Damage. Both give immediate, noticeable improvements to every future run. Avoid expensive character unlocks until you have 3-4 basic upgrades.

Pro Tips & Common Mistakes

Pro Tips

  • Always move toward open space, not away from enemies
  • Collect blood drops immediately — they disappear after a few seconds
  • Prioritize upgrades that synergize with your character's weapon
  • Use wave breaks to reposition to the center of the arena
  • Learn which enemies shoot projectiles and focus them first

Avoid These Mistakes

  • Standing still to "let the weapon work"
  • Ignoring ladders and getting trapped on the ground
  • Chasing enemies into corners
  • Spending bones on cosmetics before functional upgrades
  • Panic-jumping into enemy projectiles

// TOWN CRIER — FAQ

How do I unlock new characters?
Characters unlock by completing specific quests and reaching wave milestones. The second character typically unlocks after reaching Wave 10 with the starter. Check our characters guide for all unlock conditions.
What's the best first upgrade in the Bone Shop?
Max Health is the safest first purchase. More health means more room for mistakes while you learn. Starting Damage is a close second if you want to clear waves faster.
How long does a typical run last?
A run lasts 5-15 minutes depending on how far you get. Early runs might end at Wave 5-7; experienced players can survive 20+ waves.
Can I pause the game?
Yes. Press the pause button (Esc on keyboard, Start on controller). The game fully pauses, giving you time to plan your next move.
Do I lose everything when I die?
No. You keep all bones earned and any Bone Shop upgrades. In-run upgrades (charms, weapons) reset each run, which is normal for roguelites.
