Advanced Tips & Secrets
Movement tech, combat exploits, scoring strategies and hidden secrets that separate beginners from veteran survivors.
Advanced Movement Tech
Mastering movement is the difference between dying at Wave 12 and surviving to Wave 25+. These techniques require practice but dramatically improve your survivability.
1. Ladder Dash Cancel
When climbing or descending a ladder, pressing jump at the exact moment you reach the top/bottom platform cancels the ladder animation and gives you a small speed boost. This lets you reposition faster when enemies are closing in.
How to do it: Approach a ladder, grab it, and press jump as your character's feet touch the platform edge. Timing is tight — practice in The Sewers where ladders are abundant.
2. Wall Jump Chain
Most characters can wall-jump, but chaining multiple wall jumps between parallel walls lets you gain height faster than any ladder. In The Abyss, this is essential for escaping upward swarms.
How to do it: Jump toward a wall, press jump again when you make contact (your character will push off), then immediately drift toward the opposite wall and repeat. You can chain 3-4 wall jumps before needing to touch ground.
3. Grate Drop
Grate platforms let you drop through by pressing down + jump. Dropping through a grate at the right moment can dodge enemy projectiles that travel horizontally. This is especially useful against Cultist Shooter spread shots.
How to do it: Stand on a grate, press down + jump simultaneously. You drop through instantly. Time it so projectiles pass over your head as you fall.
4. Dash I-Frame Dodging
Characters with a dash (Blade Dancer, Shadow Runner, Lightning Monk) have invincibility frames during the dash. You can pass through enemy bodies and projectiles during these frames. Mastering this lets you navigate through otherwise impossible situations.
How to do it: Dash toward an incoming threat. The i-frames last about 0.3 seconds — just long enough to cross a single enemy or projectile. Don't overuse it; dash cooldown leaves you vulnerable.
5. Jump Attack Direction Lock
Your auto-weapon targets the nearest enemy, but during a jump you can briefly influence targeting direction by moving toward a specific enemy. This lets you focus fire on high-priority targets like shooters even when grunts are closer.
Combat & Scoring Tricks
Score multiplier system
Your score multiplier increases as you kill enemies without taking damage. Taking damage resets the multiplier to 1x. The multiplier caps at 5x. This is why no-damage runs score exponentially higher — it's not just about surviving, it's about surviving cleanly.
| Consecutive Kills (no damage) | Multiplier | Score per Kill |
|---|---|---|
| 0-9 | 1x | Base |
| 10-24 | 2x | 2x Base |
| 25-49 | 3x | 3x Base |
| 50-99 | 4x | 4x Base |
| 100+ | 5x | 5x Base |
Combat tricks for high scores
- Group before killing: Let enemies bunch up, then use AOE to kill many at once. Multi-kills give bonus score and build the multiplier faster.
- Don't take chip damage: Even 1 point of damage resets your multiplier. Use dash i-frames and precise movement to avoid every hit.
- Save chests for multiplier: Open chests when you have a high multiplier — they give bonus score based on your current multiplier.
- Boss kill bonus: Bosses give a massive score bonus. Defeating a boss at 5x multiplier can double your run score.
- Wave clear bonus: Clearing a wave quickly gives a time bonus. Don't drag out waves if you're going for score.
Exploit: Fireworks Chain Reaction
The Fireworks charm causes enemies to explode into bullets on death. If those bullets kill other enemies, those enemies also explode (if they have Fireworks). In dense waves, this creates an infinite chain reaction that clears the entire screen. Position yourself so the first enemy dies in the center of a pack to trigger maximum chaining.
Warning: Splitters
Fireworks does NOT work well against Splitter enemies. The explosion triggers their split, creating more enemies instead of clearing them. Avoid Fireworks in arenas with high Splitter density (The Hive).
Secrets & Easter Eggs
Blood Dungeon contains several hidden elements for players who explore thoroughly:
1. The Secret Room
In The Keep arena, the middle-floor left wall has a destructible section. Attack it 10 times to reveal a hidden room containing a guaranteed legendary chest. This room resets each run.
2. Nidhogg Reference
In The Sewers, if you reach Wave 7 and stand still in the exact center of the arena for 5 seconds, a Nidhogg-style sword falls from the sky and gives you a temporary damage boost. A tribute to Messhof's previous game.
3. The Golden Worm
Very rarely (approximately 1% chance), The Worm boss spawns as a golden variant. It has double HP but drops 5x bones and a guaranteed legendary charm. Worth fighting if you see it.
4. Konami Code
On the character select screen, entering the Konami code (Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A) unlocks a secret "Retro" visual filter that changes the game to a monochrome Game Boy-style palette. Purely cosmetic.
5. Developer Room
In The Abyss, at the very bottom of the shaft, there's a hidden platform below the lowest visible platform. Drop down and hold left to land on it. Contains a developer credits Easter egg and a bone reward.
Secret hunting tip
Many secrets are triggered by specific positions or actions. If you see an unusual wall texture or an out-of-place object, try attacking it or standing on it. Messhof loves hiding things in plain sight.
